This index was prepared in 2009-10 by John Patrick and we are very grateful to him for making it available to us.
It is an index of all the persons mentioned in the East Lulworth sections of the Dorset trade directories. There were no sections for East Lulworth in the directories prior to 1849 (or in 1852) and the entries for East Lulworth from these dates are taken from the Wareham sections.
This index is a finding aid only and the original directory should be consulted as many entries give more information than can be included in the index.
Names mentioned in the directory introductions are not included in the index unless they were local officials.
Entries for businesses & organisations etc. are indexed under the name of the person shown in the entry.
At the end of the index there is an extra list of entries with no personal names in the titles. Any names and positions given are shown, but these personal names are also in the main index.
In many cases there are several entries for the same person and this is because there was a significant change in their directory entry from one year to the next or they had more than one entry per year.
There are many obvious spelling and typographical errors in the directories and these have been indexed as printed in the directories. When searching for a particular name in the index and it cannot be found, it is advisable to search for alternative spellings of that name.

EAST LULWORTH, a parish in the Hundred of Winfrith and Union of Wareham and Purbeck, situated about 5½ miles south-west from Wareham, and 6 west of Corfe Castle. The living is a vicarage, in the patronage of Joseph Weld, Esq.; the present incumbent is the Rev. Isaac Urban Cooke, M.A. The church tower is an ancient and beautiful structure; the nave and chancel modern; comparatively small and neat, with nave, chancel, and square embattled tower. In the interior are several escutcheons of the Weld family, and a tablet to the memory of one of the Barings, who was drowned on the coast below in 1820, by the upsetting of a boat. Here is also a large Roman Catholic chapel and two schools. Lulworth Castle is a noble and massive structure, forming a square of 80 feet, with a round tower at each corner; the interior is in a corresponding degree of magnificence, and the castle is situated in an extensive and beautiful park. It was built of the united ruins of Mount Poynings and Bindon Abbey, by Thomas Howard, Earl of Suffolk, and was finished about the year 1640, when it became, by purchase, the property of the Weld family, who still possess it. It has been honoured with the presence of James I, Charles II, James II, when Duke of York, George III and George IV, when Price of Wales, and was for some time the residence of H.R.H. the late Duke of Glousester, and also of the French King, Charles X, and the late Sir Robert Peel, Bart. The parish comprises about 2,860 acres, the property of J. Weld, Esq., who is lord of the manor. Many relics of antiquity have been found within the parish in barrows supposed to be of British origin; and on top of a perpendicular cliff of 700 feet are the ramparts of a strong hill fort, commonly called Ring’s Hill, or Flower’s Barrow, i.e. Flori Vallum, so named, probably, after some Roman commander. The population, in 1851, was 450.

LULWORTH (EAST), a village and a parish in Wareham district, Dorset. The village stands 1 mile from the coast, 3¼ SSE of Wool r. station, and 5½ SW of Wareham; and has a post office under Wareham. The parish, with West Lulworth, comprises 4,364 acres; of which 25 are water. Real property of E. L. alone, £2,285. Pop., 453. Houses, 88. The property belonged to the Lulworths; passed to the Newburghs, the Howards, and the Welds; and belongs now to Joseph Weld, Esq. Lulworth Castle, the seat of Mr. Weld, was originally built in 1146; was rebuilt in 1588-1641, chiefly out of the ruins of Bindon abbey; is a cube of 80 feet, with two round corner towers, each 110 feet high; commands a beautiful sea-view, through a gap in a range of chalk hills; was visited by James I., Charles II., and George III.; gave an asylum, in 1830, to Charles X. of France, when driven from his throne; contains a state bedroom, some family portraits by Lely, and others in pencil by Hussey; and stands in a park of about five miles in circuit, amid a very secluded tract of country, adjacent to a sequestered and very romantic reach of coast. A modern chapel is connected with the castle, but stands apart from it; and contains an illuminated psalter of the time of Edward I., a copy of Raphael’s picture of the Transfiguration, and an altar decorated with porphyry, alabaster, and Italian marble. A trappist monastery stood in the grounds prior to the peace of 1815. A tradition ascribed varionsly to Lulworth and to Painshill gave rise to O’Keefe’s comedy of “The London Hermit, or Rambles in Dorsetshire. ”There are a treble-ditched camp of 5 acres, and several barrows. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Salisbury. Value, £109. Patron, J. Weld, Esq. EAST LULWORTH is a parish, 4 miles south-east from Wool station on the Bournemouth and weymouth section of the Southern Railway and 6 miles south-west from Wareham, situated on the shore of the English Channel, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Winfrith, rural district of Wareham and Purbeck, county court district of Swanage, petty sessional division of Wareham, rural deanery of Purbeck, archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone in the late perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells, the earliest of which dates from 1587: in the church are several escutcheons of the Weld family, and a tablet to William Baring esq. M.P. fourth son of Sir Francis Baring, who was drowned here 19 July, 1820: the chancel and nave were rebuilt in 1863, and the tower was restored in 1900. The view from the church and its grounds looking towards the sea in Arishmel cove is uniquely beautiful. The tower of the church is strikingly massive and grand: there are 188 sittings. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a vicarage, with that of Coombe Keynes annexed, joint net yearly value £364, with residence, in the gift of Herbert J. Weld esq. But pro hâc vice the University of Oxford, and held since 1929 by the Rev. Henry Lawrence Phillips of Queens College, Birmingham. St. Mary’s Roman Catholic church here was the first built in England after the Reformation, and was erected in 1792 by special permission of George III, by Thomas Weld esq. By workmen specially brought from Rome; it is a circular edifice of stone in the Italian style: the altar is of marble, richly carved, and on either side of it are two very fine oil paintings: Archbishop Carroll, of Baltimore, the first Roman Catholic bishop in America, was consecrated here in 1794 by Bishop Walmesley O.S.B.: It is at present (1931) served by the Rev. Bernard Tracy, who resides in the parish. Near the village is a Roman Catholic cemetery, formed in 1860. Many relics of antiquity have been found within the parish in barrows, supposed to be of British origin; and on top of a perpendicular cliff, 600 feet in height, are the ramparts of a strong hill fort, commonly called “Ring’s Hill,” or “Flower’s Barrow.” Lulworth Castle is the residence of Herbert Joseph Weld esq. J.P.: it is of stone, with a circular tower at each corner, and is situated in a park 0f 640 acres, surrounded by a wall 4 miles in circumference; in 1929 the castle was destroyed by fire, little but the shell remiaing: it was partly rebuilt for occupation in 1931: the house, as it stood before the fire, was built from the ruins of Mount Poynings and Bindon Abbey by Thomas Howard, Viscount Bindon, the foundations being laid 1588 and the work finished about the year 1609, but little of the interior was completed until it became by purchase the property of the Weld family: it has been honoured by the presence of James I, Charles II, James II, when Duke of York, George III, George IV, when Prince of Wales, and has been the residence of H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester, the French King, Charles X, and the late Sir Robert Peel bart. And in 1902 was visited by H.M. The late King Edward VII. Herbert Joseph Weld esq. is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The area is 2,304 acres of land and 12 of tidal water and foreshore; the population in 1921 was 271.
