EAST LULWORTH, a parish in the Hundred of Winfrith and Union of Wareham and Purbeck, situated about 5½ miles south-west from Wareham, and 6 west of Corfe Castle. The living is a vicarage, in the patronage of Joseph Weld, Esq.; the present incumbent is the Rev. Isaac Urban Cooke, M.A. The church tower is an ancient and beautiful structure; the nave and chancel modern; comparatively small and neat, with nave, chancel, and square embattled tower. In the interior are several escutcheons of the Weld family, and a tablet to the memory of one of the Barings, who was drowned on the coast below in 1820, by the upsetting of a boat. Here is also a large Roman Catholic chapel and two schools. Lulworth Castle is a noble and massive structure, forming a square of 80 feet, with a round tower at each corner; the interior is in a corresponding degree of magnificence, and the castle is situated in an extensive and beautiful park. It was built of the united ruins of Mount Poynings and Bindon Abbey, by Thomas Howard, Earl of Suffolk, and was finished about the year 1640, when it became, by purchase, the property of the Weld family, who still possess it. It has been honoured with the presence of James I, Charles II, James II, when Duke of York, George III and George IV, when Price of Wales, and was for some time the residence of H.R.H. the late Duke of Glousester, and also of the French King, Charles X, and the late Sir Robert Peel, Bart. The parish comprises about 2,860 acres, the property of J. Weld, Esq., who is lord of the manor. Many relics of antiquity have been found within the parish in barrows supposed to be of British origin; and on top of a perpendicular cliff of 700 feet are the ramparts of a strong hill fort, commonly called Ring’s Hill, or Flower’s Barrow, i.e. Flori Vallum, so named, probably, after some Roman commander. The population, in 1851, was 450.
