Mary Edwards lived in central London not far from the Elephant and Castle.
The census records show
1851 – Foxcote House, Shipston-On-Stour, Chipping Campden, Mary is a nursery nurse for the Gandolfi family
1861 – 4, Walworth Terrace, St Marys Newington. Mary is a house servant for Paul James Turquard Independent Minister Of York St Chapel and his family (two small children, his wife has died)

So she went from a catholic family, Mrs Gandolfi was the niece of Joseph Weld’s wife, to a Independent Minister in London. In between 1851 and 1861 Teresa was born which leads me to suspect that Mary could have been her mother and this could account for the radical change.

I’m busy at the moment with Melmor Davis, and there appears to be several of them, all born different dates of course.

You mentioned a marriage between Melmor and Elizabeth Roberts in 1804; haven’t come across that one.

But only found out yesterday that a Melmor Davis was charged with stealing a horse and sentenced to death in 1810, this was reprieved (same one?) and another Melmor was deported in 1838 to OZ where he died in 1841.

Do you have any more info on these?

It seems most of the Davis family came from around the Winterborne Whitchurch area, so you may find more about Elizabeth Roberts there.

I have found my 4th great grandmother on your site. She married Melmor Davis on 22/6/1804. I then went happily back another two generations, Aren't we lucky to have Dorset relatives and OPC. I then did a quick search on Rootschat for the parents name and found that there are two Elizabeth Roberts, who got married in East Lulworth within two years of each other. ARRGH

So could you have a look in the East Lulworth Parish registers and see if there is any extra information on Elizabeth Roberts married Melmor Davis 22/6/1804
Elizabeth Roberts married Thomas Murry (Murray) 20/7/1802

I am thinking of Origin Parish, Witnesses, age etc

"Alfred Slade's child dies aged 6 months 2nd March 1874."  UPDATE

I would like to say 'thank you' to Natalia A. McKenzie for transcribing the full diaries of Henry Rolls and his descendants, for recording the Events in East Lulworth, where I found "Alfred Slade's child dies aged 6 months 2nd March 1874."

I know my Gt Grandfather was living in East Lulworth at that time and I managed to find a Death Registration for a Frances Slade 1874 aged 0 Registered in Wareham.  I followed my hunch, and sent for the Death Certificate, as several family members have the name 'Frances' as a second name.

The Death Certificate arrived yesterday and proved that my Gt Grandfather Alfred Slade did indeed lose a female child, Frances Slade who died on 28 February 1874 in East Lulworth aged 6 months.  My Gt Grandmother, Mary Emma Slade was in attendance and the informant.

Maybe the date in the Diary, of 2nd March 1874, was for her burial?   

Either way,  it has at least enabled me to find 1 of the 2 missing children, as on the 1911 Census, where Alfred 74 & Mary Emma Slade 64 are living at 26 Ashley Down Road, Horfield Bristol,  it states that 9 children were born alive.  I had previously found 7 children and now I have 8, thanks to Natalie and the East Lulworth website for the wonderful good work!    

The question remains though, who was the other child and where was he/she born?

Hi,
I have been using this site for about a year when I made the amazing discovery that my great x2 grandmother Mary Edwards was from East Lulworth by her entry in census for 1891. At that time she was living in south east London. I really was pleasantly surprised as it is a favourite spot of mine. So it was great to be able to find out more through this site, it is really one of the best local parish sites I have used, so well done Martin.
I am also a friend on Facebook and like to think I have a virtual cottage in the village. I feel so sad that Mary left such a beautiful place for London and that my nan, her granddaughter, had no idea of her heritage.
I have one line of enquiry which I haven't been able to bottom out which is who is the mother of Teresa Edwards. Teresa appears in the 1861 census living with her grandparents Joseph and Julia Edwards. I suspect that she is my Mary's daughter but haven't found any evidence yet.

If anyone has any info on this I would be really interested.

I have compiled a lot of information on the Champ and related families but have a problem with William Champ of East Lulworth who married Maria Montier in 1801 in Midhurst, Sussex.
According to William’s death certificate, he died aged 85 in 1864, this puts his birth around 1779. The nearest birth or baptism record I can find for William is not until 1785, a baptism to Richard Champ & Martha. In those days baptisms were rarely delayed that long. However Richard and Martha were not the only Champs in the village and not all records survive. Census doesn't help as early ones rounded off ages to the nearest 5.
Does anyone have clear evidence that the William Champ who married Maria (Mary) Montier is the son of Richard and Martha?

In addition to the Crispin entries in the IGI for St. Mary's Roman Catholic Chapel at East Lulworth, which is in the grounds of Lulworth Castle, a flying visit to the Record Office in Dorchester produced the following Crispin references in the baptism records (apologies if any small inaccuracies have crept in)
17 Apr 1841: M A Crispin is the godmother to Mary Meaden, daur. of William and his wife Elizabeth (Hooper), born 15 April 1841
6 May 1841: Johanna Crispin is the godmother to Mary Harvel Meaden, daur. of John and his wife Johanna (Fancy), born 4 May 1841

My Grandfather, Charles Joseph Slade was born in East Lulwortht on the 15th December 1876, he died in 1940 in Bristol, long before I was born!
He married my Grandmother, Sarah Jane Davis in 1903 at the RC Church of The Holy Apostle, Park Place, Bristol. As Charles was ‘born’ a Catholic and Sarah was C of E, she converted to Catholicism. Charles and Sarah Slade had 8 Children, my Dad being the youngest. Their son Reginald became a RC priest and he performed all of his siblings marriages. The family worshiped in the RC Church, St. Mary’s on the Quay, in the ‘old’ centre of Bristol. Charles was a master guilder by trade but gave up his job to help his wife Sarah run her millinery shop on the corner of Union St, Bristol.

Charles parents were Alfred & Mary Emma Slade nee Perris. They were both living in Fortunes Well, Portland, Dorset at the time of their marriage. The marriage certificate shows Alfred’s fathers as Thomas Slade, a Working Gardener.
Alfred and his wife both died in Bristol.

Further research revealed that Alfred Slade was born in Soberton, Hampshire and his parents were Thomas Slade and Sarah Cooper. They married in Soberton in 1830.

1841 census – Alfred Slade is living in West Lodge, Soberton, Hampshire with his father Thomas (a labourer) and mother Sarah, siblings Richard c.1832, Eliza c.1834, Emma c.1838 and Joseph aged 5 weeks. Children all born Soberton, Hampshire

1851 - Alfred Slade is living in Westbury on Trym, Gloucestershire with his father Thomas Slade born abt 1805 East Lulworth (farm labourer) and step mother Elizabeth, sister Emma and half brother (William) Pester

His other brother Joseph Walter Slade born 1841 is living in East Lulworth with his Aunt and Uncle, Hannah nee Slade and George Kitcatt.
His mother Sarah had died whilst he was a young child.
Whilst in is teens Joseph Walter Slade emigrated to the U.S.A

JOSEPH WALTER SLADE is regarded as one of the enterprising farmers of West Fork. He went to Winnebago, Illinois, where he learned the blacksmith trade. He enlisted in Company C, 67th Illinois Infantry, and after four months was taken sick and discharged on account of disability. He came to Franklin County in 1867, located on section 5, West Fork, where he first bought forty acres. He had the first Blacksmith shop in the township, which for years was the only one within a radius of six or seven miles, and had all the work he could attend to. He began life with nothing but invincible determination to succeed, and as a result, is the possessor of the 300 acres of farming land, and ten acres of timber. He has a productive orchard, with fine groves, which were started in 1868, making the place pleasant and attractive. He is also largely engaged in stock raising. In October, 1882, he formed a partnership, under the firm name of Hocking and Slade, and engaged in general merchandising in Sheffield, which is proving successful.
He was married October 31, 1863, to Rosa Burns, of Winnebago, Illinois, whose parents emigrated from Massachusetts to Illinois, in 1857.
Mr. and Mrs. Slade are the parents of ten children: Melinda, wife of Irvin Scott, Thomas J, Minnie L, Charles H, Nellie, Nettie, Freddie, Lucy, Georgia and Chester Leroy.

1861 - Alfred Slade is living in lodgings in Weymouth and recorded as being 24, an excavator, and born in Westbury, Glos,
1871 – Alfred Slade is living in East Lulworth with his wife and family aged 32, born in Roos, Hants…. an engine driver at a saw mills

1881 - Alfred is living in Cromhall, Glos., aged 40, born in Lulworth, Dorset,.. with wife and family and he is now a gamekeeper
1891 census - no trace of the family whatsoever!!!

Alfred Slade’s father Thomas Slade was baptised in RC Chapel. Lulworth Castle.

Alfred’s father, Thomas Slade, was Baptized 16th May 1806 the RC Chapel in Lulworth Castle. He died 16th February 1868 in North Chideock, Dorset. He was married twice. His first marriage to Sarah Cooper, Soberton, Hampshire, produced 5 Children.
His second marriage to Elizabeth Mayo on 20 Jan 1849 in Bristol, produced another 6 Children some born in Bristol others born in Dorset.

Thomas’s parents were Joseph Slade and Elizabeth Yeteman/Yateman/Yeateman
They were married 30th May 1796 in East Lulworth. I believe these are their children.

Mary Ann, Baptised 18 Apr 1797 Died aged 21 Buried 12 Mar 1819

Francis, son, Baptised 20 May 1799 died aged 18 Buried 05 Mar 1813

Hannah, Baptised 19 Dec 1801-1884 Thomas, Baptised 16 May 1806

Elizabeth, Baptised 19 JUL 1809 Charles, Baptised 09 DEC 1812

James Short, Baptised 16 SEP 1815 Frances, dau, Baptised 16 SEP 1815

Hannah Slade married George Kitcatt on 03 Feb 1823. East Lulworth. Parish Records
Elizabeth Slade married Charles Penny on 28 June 1830. East Lulworth. Parish Record

I have proven my Slade lineage with BDM certificates to share with others who might be related.

Hello. I just wanted to say a big thank you to all who created dorsetopc records. I have been fascinated with my family history so far. My grandfather was James Lucas of Coombe Keynes, born 1857 and at the age of 50 married my grandmother Eliza Harriet James in Tyneham during 1908. She was only 22. My father was born on 28 June 1924 and grandfather died 11 days later on July 9th. Eliza then married a toyboy, one Wilfred Bertram Watts in January 1926, who was 23 yrs to her 40 yrs. She had two children before her marriage to James Lucas and I would like to think James Lucas was the father of them also.
If anyone has further information on this family, I would be pleased to hear from them.

I am researching the family of William Linington who was baptised in Swanage in 1786 & also married there in 1808. However all of his children were baptised in the RC chapel at Lulworth Castle between 1809 & 1833. And William himself was actually baptised (for a second time) in the RC chapel in 1815. During that period 2 of the children were buried in Swanage and William is living in Swanage working as a Stone Mason on the 1841 census. He and his wife were eventually buried in Swanage.
In those days it must have been quite a journey from Swanage to East Lulworth so I am wondering if it was common for children from so far away to be baptised there? Any other thoughts on all of this would also be much appreciated. (Incidentally the Roman Catholic connection ended in the next generation))

So delighted with your website. Pleased to see the 1837 birth of Rebecca Denny dau of James Denny and Jane Southerden. James was in the coastguard service and was moved immediately out of Sussex where he had married Jane. We wonder if Jane died in childbirth because we have found no more records of her. James was later moved to his native Ireland and married a Prendegast and had a son. Rebecca came to Australia and married John Fraser Anderson from Golspie in Scotland. They were my great grandparents.

We are 4th cousins. My line comes from Joseph/Ann Parker who had 13 children. My ancestor is Stephen George 1810 who moved to Salisbury, Wilts. He married Ann Forder 1829 in Fisherton Anger, Wilts and they had 13 children. Robert William born 1848, Salisbury married Harriet Adams 1867 in Reading. They had 7 Children. Annie born 1868 married George William King in 1887 in Bethnal Green and her sister Daisy Caroline 1885 married William Small Millard in 1911 in Bridgend, Wales. Annie had my grandmother Ellen Jessie in 1895 and Daisy had my father in 1926, so my parents were second cousins. I had info in my file down to Ethel Violet Arnell but I have 7 children born to John Thomas Arnell and Ann Priestley. I also have info on William Lucas married to Esther (1820-1857) and had 3 children, Henry, Louisa and Sarah Jane. William was the son of William Lucas and Elizabeth Farr m 1806 in E.L. Two of Hannah's siblings married into the Skiller families which is another family mentioned a lot. Charlotte married James Skiller, father William and Joseph Jnr married Mary Skiller, father John. I have a lot of info on the marriages to siblings.

I am descended from Joseph 1782 Wool, Hannah 1817, daughter of Joseph Presslee and Ann Parker, Ann 1851 daughter of Hannah and father unknown.

Ann married John Thomas Arnell in Donnington, Sussex in 1877, and had 6 children, 1 being William Henry Arnell my g grandfather born 1883 and married Laura Gertrude Florence Ide in 1916 at Chichester,  Sussex.

They had 2 children, my grandmother Ethel Violet 1921 and William John Henry 1922 died 2nd war.

My grandmother married John Michael Charles Smith, formally Edward James Jordan at Worthing 1940. They had 6 children, the eldest my mother Carol P Smith 1941.

My mother married my father 1958 and had 4 children.

I am researching Presslee, from Wool and East Lulworth. My grandmother’s paternal Grandmother was Ann Presslee, born east Lulworth 1841, daughter of Hannah Presslee, father unknown.
Sometimes written as Presley or Priestly.
There is more than enough information, very informative.
